Find Your Natural Singing Voice!

Have you always wanted to find your true singing voice?  Part of getting the most out of your singing voice is understanding your own biology. When you have a better understanding of your own anatomy, you are more able to know what to expect from your voice and perhaps most importantly what not to expect. Part of this understanding is knowing your own voice type, what many singing teachers refer to as voice classification.  Many a times it happens with me that I want to sing a song but my voice does not fit in the range and I end up messing the whole song by trying to imitate the original artist/singer of that song. I know this happens with many of us.  The truth is that most singers have a hard time finding their natural singing voice because they start off by imitating others. Adele, Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift you name it. Everyone wants to sound like their favorite singer. And this makes sense, because you want to show your inspiration and it's difficul...

And this makes sense, because you want to show your inspiration and it's difficult to have the confidence in your own voice when you're so inspired by your favorite singers. However, the truth is that it's very difficult to truly imitate or mimic another singer and sound good doing it. Now there's nothing wrong with being inspired by other artists, but it's very important that you find your own voice as you become an artist.

I'm going to share with you five steps which I have been using and have helped me to find my natural singing voice.
1)The first vocal element in finding your natural voice is to learn to sing with chest voice. Chest voice is the name for the range of notes at the bottom part of your singing voice.
2)In the second step in finding your natural voice is to learn to sing with head voice. Head Voice is the term for the top part of your singing voice.
3)The third vocal element for finding your true singing style is to sing with mixed voice. Mixed voice is the term given to singing with a blend of the chest voice and head voice so that your voice sounds even from the bottom to the top. If you learn how to sing in mixed voice correctly, you'll be able to sing any note in your entire range and still sound like you.

There are also two musical elements that I want to share with you when you're learning to find your voice.

4)The first step in the musical department is that you need to choose a genre that matches your voice.
5)The second step in musical elements to find your voices that you want is to choose songs that fit your voice. Too many singers will choose songs that are too high, too low, or just don't showcase their true voice as well as it could.
One easy way to overcome this is to sing a vocal exercise instead of the lyrics. By singing the musical exercise, you will automatically go into singing the exercise rather than trying to imitate the singer. This is very important, the journey in finding your own voice can take a bit of time and yes recording yourself can help with this.

Use the image below to familiarize yourself with the numbering system.

Beside these 5 steps there are many more elements present in the process of finding your own voice and "vocal range" is one of the most important among them.
Knowing your vocal range is important because it allows you to judge which songs you can comfortably and confidently sing.

Your vocal range consists of the range between the lowest and highest notes that you can sing comfortably and consistently. If you’re not sure how to find your vocal range, you can easily do so by hopping over to a piano or downloading a keyboard app. You can pinpoint your range by using the piano numbering system. Talking about notes as “the second A above middle C” can start to get confusing, so a widely used technique is to accompany note names with their given octave number on a keyboard. Middle "C" is called C4 because it is the 4th C up on the keyboard. The "C" an octave above C4 is C5, the "C" an octave below C4 is C3 an so on.
Once you’ve determined your range, G4 – C5 for example, you can then begin to work on improving it!

I hope my blog will help you to find your natural singing voice. I encourage you all to not get hung up on these 5 steps and learn to embrace the physical aspects and boundaries of your voice and then explore and test these boundaries. Trust and enjoy the learning process and remember- Your voice is unique and beautiful!!
